What Are The Possible Ramafications of A Magnetic Reversal?
Like with most
theories regarding predictions of Magnetic Reversals, it is equally difficult to predict what some of the ramifications to
the Earth may be if one were to occur within the near future. There are many
theories circulating that it would mean the end of the world, or the dawn of the next Ice Age, or even that the entire Earth
would be destroyed without the protective Magnetic Field, and the Earth would end up like Mars. On the other hand, some facts about the Earth cannot be discarded, that in fact say the Earth would be
just fine.
As stated
before, during a Reversal there may be the presence of many poles (North and South) all around the Earth, so this may affect
anything or anyone that is relying on a compass. Many have worried that this
fact may cause severe problems with animals, such as birds and whales, which rely on the poles to migrate, but the contrary
has been suggested. A reversal takes thousands of years to occur, so it would
seem logical that the animals would adapt and have “time to reorient themselves” (Bentley 2003). In conjunction, we as humans have been on the Earth during a series of reversals and there has been no
information found within research that shows problems between animal and human development during a reversal. Nor, has any information been found that there is any correlation between Magnetic Reversals and mass extinctions
“during geological history” (British Geological Survey 2007).
Some other things the
Earth could perhaps expect, is an increase in the amount of radiation exposure to our satellites and airplanes, but perhaps
there would be enough of the ozone layer as well as a “residual field to provide protection for people”, which
is no more exposure than what already occurs at the existing poles where the “field lines currently dip” (Bentley
2003). There would also be an abundance of aurora activity, also known as the
Northern Lights, being able to be seen all over the world as opposed to only being witnessed further up North. Theorists have also stated that the ozone layer would also provide the Earth with protection during a Magnetic
Reversal (due to the field decreasing in intensity up to ninety percent), “the ozone layer – which was thought
to be vulnerable without a protective shield – the effects would be negligible unless there was a super-solar proton
event, referring to the high-energy radiation that can accompany solar flares. In
any case, the ozone layer would bounce back from the heavy bombardment, healing itself in just two to three years” (Bentley
2003).
The Earth has seen its share of Magnetic Reversals and has survived. Granted, none have occurred while humans and civilization have been as developed as we are today, but as
previously stated, it is nearly impossible to make precise declarations as to what might happen in hopes that humans and civilization
can prepare. We may just have to wait and see…
