Many people
have many different theories in regards to what may cause a Magnetic Reversal. Some
theorists say that nothing causes it, that it’s just a random event. Others
say that there are factors, which can contribute to a reversal of the Magnetic Field.
The truth of the matter is that there is no possible way for us, as humans, to understand the complexity of the inner
workings of the Earth without getting our hands on it. Since we’ve only
been able to get through about 12km through the Earth’s crust, it technically still remains a mystery. “Predicting the occurrence of a reversal based upon knowledge of the current state of the magnetic
field is about as easy as predicting the next bull market on Wall Street; you don’t know it’s happening until
it’s half over!” (U.S. Geological Survey 2007)
In reference to the theory that nothing causes a Magnetic Reversal, it has been best described in terms that, “nature
allows for different kinds of dynamos, some of which just simply have the property that undergo occasional random reversals. The Earth’s core happens to be one of those dynamo types and reversals …
just happen” (U.S. Geological Survey 2007).
In conjunction to that, the
theorists that believe that there is a cause or pattern have thought that the occurrence of Mantle Plumes all over the Earth
(which pull large amounts of magma from the Mantle Core, then continue to drain from a volcano for years) cause a factor in
cooling down the liquid core, which in turn contributes to the disruption of temperature of the dynamo, and therefore may
play a role in Magnetic Reversals.
